French Cloud, Russian Transparency, Ancient Appirition

One idea, multiple languages: universal clumsy attempt to encapsulate a foggy concept in a word. While alive, I’m wide awake and taking notes. What I am chasing is unbeknownst to me, but the mystery repeats. All I know I have to guide me in within, and intuition is holding onto the pieces that resonate deeply with my sense of wonder and awe along the journey. Thus I sojourn, reveling in the unraveling and increasing clarity that comes with knowledge of self, knowledge of other, knowledge of one inter-connected everything and nothing.  One concept is cracked into many words around the world, each carry the denotative and connotative weight of a piece of the greater whole. Consider the linguistic fixation (as seen below) a way in which I can archive the shards I collect in hopes to create some syenocism and cohesion to ideas that swallow the universe, the universal, whole, yes hole:

Numinous

  • Numinous (pronounced /nuːmɨnəs, njuːmɨnəs/) (from the Classical Latin numen) is an English adjective describing the power or presence of a divinity. The word was popularised in the early twentieth century by the German theologian Rudolf Otto in his influential book Das Heilige (1917; translated into English as The Idea of the Holy, 1923).

  • According to Otto the numinous experience has two aspects: mysterium tremendum, which is the tendency to invoke fear and trembling; and mysterium fascinans, the tendency to attract, fascinate and compel. The numinous experience also has a personal quality to it, in that the person feels to be in communion with a wholly other. The numinous experience can lead in different cases to belief in deities, the supernatural, the sacred, the holy, and the transcendent.

     

  • Similarly, unpleasant or frightening scenes or experiences can lead to a sense of an unseen presence of ghosts, evil spirits or a general sense of the presence of evil. Visions or hallucinations of god, gods, the devil or devils can also happen. Non-religious usage The idea is not necessarily a religious one: noted atheists Carl Sagan, Christopher Hitchens, Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris have discussed the importance of separating the numinous from the supernatural.

  • Carlos Castaneda deals with a related concept in his books dealing with a particular Native American tradition of sorcery. According to the teacher Don Juan Matus (whose true existence has been called into question) there is just such an inconceivable dimension of human existence whose presence may be sensed but neither grasped by the senses or any rational framework. He refers to this as the Nagual. This Nagual (which seems to differ from a conventional anthropological understanding of the word) is a power that may be harnessed by a ‘man of knowledge’, the shaman or sorcerer who has undergone an arduous spiritual training. It may be viewed as “the intense feeling of unknowingly knowing that there is something which cannot be seen.” This “knowing” can “befall” or overcome a person at any time and in any place — in a cathedral; next to a silent stream; on a lonely road; early in the morning or in the face of a beautiful sunset.

  • In theological language, this fear is due to the in-compatibility between man’s egotism and the divine purity, between man’s self-aggravated separateness and the infinity of God. “Nostalgia for paradise’ was a term also used by Mircea Eliade to help bring understanding to the numinous. This idea was based on the theory that a person has a sort of longing for perfection or paradise, which creates a platform for experience of the numinous.

  • Mysterium tremendum et fascinans (“fearful and fascinating mystery”) is a Latin phrase which Rudolf Otto uses in The Idea of the Holy to name the awe-some (fascinating and full of awe) mystery that was the object common to all forms of religious experience. Mysterium tremendum is described in The Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley in the following terms: The literature of religious experience abounds in references to the pains and terrors overwhelming those who have come, too suddenly, face to face with some manifestation of the mysterium tremendum.

  • Etymologically, numinous comes from the Latin word numen, which originally, literally meant “nodding”, but was associated with meanings of “command” or “divine majesty”. It’s earliest known use as meaning ‘divine majesty’ dates to the middle of the seventeenth century[1]. Rudolf Otto Otto’s use of the term as referring to a characteristic of religious experience was influential among intellectuals of the subsequent generation. For example, numinous as understood by Otto was a frequently quoted concept in the writings of Carl Jung and C. S. Lewis. The notion of the numinous and the holy (note: alternative spelling, “wholly”) other were also central to the religious studies of Mircea Eliade.

Russian Literature, Quixotic and Clever Cunning

The question I awoke wondering: My intuition guides me, so then, what swelling and pulsating knowledge pushes and pulls the nature and direction of my intuition?
The first question that struck me while studying for a midterm in modern Russian art (to be examined in T minus too soon): What is it about the Russian language that is distinct and bold, artistic and concise, so perfectly fitting for discussing the cosmos, so pregnant with potential through words, inherently clumsy, to engineer a blueprint to break through the next beyond the horizon?
This question has no definite answer, and this search is a fledgling in its nubile awakening, but better to try than not at all. The following struck me relevant (below string of words), representing to me the way in which the Russian language emphasizes abscense equal to presence, where translucency between the two is not only possible its perceivable, and spoken of.

The Divine Source

Listening to a Joseph Campbell interview on my iPod, walking through campus, have to interact with these ideas somewhere, so my smile stays plastered and once again I return to this place in cyberspace for honesty:

God is not the source of the energy; it is the manifestation, the vehicle of the energy, discovered through the realization of wonder.

God is a thought. God is an idea. But it’s reference is to something that transcends all thinking.

There is an old story, the story of the spiritual quest, to find the inward thing which you basically are. All of the symbols in mythology refer to you. You are God in your deepest identity. You are one with the transcendent. The images of God are many. The masks of eternity both cover and reveal the face of glory. The masks of god signify the ultimate reality, myths are masks of god that signify what lies beyond the horizon.

Put eloquently in a Hindu scripture: truth is One; the sages speak of it by many names.

There is a dimension of the universe that is not available to our senses. participation in divinity is the moment of ‘ahha’ witnessing a beautiful sunset.

An excerpt from the mini-paper presentation I turned in today in my modern Russian art class. The prompt: where is here? where is there?

To understand the whereabouts of here and the whereabouts of there is a progressing definition, a circumference of past and/or present perspectives locating ‘here’ as my place inside of a  past or future space and time. Here is the present, a moment perpetually eclipsing into the past. As soon as here is considered, here has slipped away and the moment is merely a memory of a past there or a there to be realized in the future.

Here is the shadow of a swinging door. The optical illusion of there is created by the horizontal horizon of binocular vision; although perception depicts the horizon as linear, beyond the horizon can never be realized in the present tense and place of here. What retinal vision obscures is the eternally eclipsing sphere, coiling into itself and expanding from a self-sustaining source.

The shadow of the swinging door swings into the future, but the means has no ends, the future is always there and when one arrives to a specific here that was once a there, there is once again beyond reach. The paradoxical nature of here as a present time in a present domain is that here can never  be captured, and yet, we are trapped in the confines of here.

No human has the ability to hop-scotch outside of the box of here into a there before there has arrived. Escaping the bounds of time and space have provided domains that enable minds to shift vantage points in perceiving reality, and dreams, drugs, meditation, etc., have enabled minds to contemplate the wonder and whimsey of here and there: there is a reality that does not exist until it is here, and here can never be captured.

Hallucinations, delusions, psychosis and insanity are realms of heres and there’s bring up the issue of reinforcing bounds of here and there in mainstream society. What makes the alternative realities alternative at all are the lack of observation and validation from sensory organs outside of the imaginer’s own agreeing with the time-space domain existence of those here and there’s.  The imagination is an all-powerful utility and resource humans are endowed with, and accessing the ‘crazy’ within, weather one choses to or not, often sparks revolutions and tectonic shifts in ideological paradigms for entire civilizations.

For the time being, my personal definitions for here and there are as follows: here is the thread seamlessly weaving the fibers of space and into an infinity, infinitely expanding and collapsing, opening the future of potential time-space localities of ‘there’  and bending out from past time-space localities of ‘there.’

I am a hypocrite. Two simultaneous truths held at once. I am unsetteled: home and hungry with a bag full of organic foods from a health food store outside of south-central neighborhood I call home. Turning into familiar territory on the return trip, a man gnashes knuckles against a pay phones sprouting from shattered glass and pavement. The machine ate the change and the stomache rumbles and bus fare needs begging.  My actions illuminate my contribution to this community, a polarized and polarizing balance of haves and have nots, and so I sit still and caught in conflict because in this moment, my word sums the value of a packaged presentation tool.

Story Tells Primate

Actions speak the story of intentions.

Intensity of intention faces the history of civilization, fragmentation, and categorization as temperamental obstacles obscuring The Way in life’s illusory labyrinth. Ancient wisdom is true to wisdom today. Despite advances in tools and centuries of copulated (yes, I said what I meant) sedimentary knowledge, ancient wisdom still acts as a compass rose, or a force of attraction between the socialized, auto-domesticated human and human intuition.  The universal stories of symbols and archetypes stay true to human condition and assist spiritual alchemy in knowledge of self, knowledge of one, one interconnected, one universal.

Humans are the storytelling primate. Stories are enacted through recitation of memory. Cellular memory, muscle memory, collective unconscious, identity, it’s all the same: actions story-tell intentions at a velocity determined in part by resilience, reliability and validity, where ones purpose is interpreted often through the least squares regression line—-residuals, residuals, residuals.

Five Year Old

I kissed the western wall of my first bedroom

the day Mom told me we were moving away.

My womb outside of the womb, moving

my world inside of the world, away.

My imagination, my playground, my lost and my found:

moving away from home, a faint and fading memory.

The plaster pigment absorbed my pressing lips against its face,

pulling the overripe scarlet color off my mouth.

Two semi-circles separated into familiar lines

Drawing my smile, smiling at me,

Smiling at me.

I sat beneath the sun-kissed surface of the wall

set between copper door hinges and The Wizard of Oz poster

that sounded aloud, my mother’s voice, breezed in through the open

window and wrapped its familiar phrase around me:

Everything I need to know I learned from the Wizard of Oz.

The sound of fury shook my sanctuary

when my mother stormed inside and saw the fresh stain,

red as crime lips scraping the surface of a showcase wall.

Charged and convicted of vandalism,
